The Romans understood and enjoyed the thermal nature of our waters.
The first documentary reference appeared in 1270, in “La Carta puebla del Concejo de Nava” (The Town Charter of Nava), given by Alfonso X (The Wise).
There are later documents that refer to the therapeutic properties of its waters including the medical treaty of the prestigious Doctor Casal.
In 1757, a pilgrim walking the Camino de Santiago, wrote the following in his diary: “the presence of a medicinal thermal spring, on the shores of the Prada River, which is called Fuente Santa (Saintly Fountain), as sick people get better and never worse”.
In 1846, the Mineral-Medicinal Declaration of Public Utility was issued by Royal Order and the spa construction works began.
Once the work was completed, it was soon used by many because of the waters’ properties, helping to cure numerous ailments including: stomach, kidney, anaemia, skin diseases, etc. The solid marble bath built for Queen Elizabeth II can still be seen today.
The fame of the waters properties to a great leap forward and the bottled format began to be sold in chemists.
Between 1936 and 1939, during the Spanish Civil War, the spa was partially destroyed and converted into a hospital tent.
The natural mineral water started to be bottled in 1968 for the food and catering industry.
